Tick Season Is Changing: Why Prevention Matters More Than Ever

Ticks Are Active Earlier — and Closer to Home
With milder winters and earlier spring temperatures, ticks are becoming active earlier in the year, remaining present later into the fall, and increasingly appearing in local neighbourhoods – not just wooded areas. Even pets that stay close to home are now at risk.
Prevention Options at Bronte
At Bronte, we’re finding that consistent prevention is the most effective way to protect pets. The goal is to reduce exposure, prevent infection, and keep pets healthy, active, and comfortable over the long term.
We offer two reliable prevention options to suit different lifestyles:
- 12-Month Injection: Provides continuous protection for the entire year with a single dose, eliminating the need to remember monthly treatments. This option is ideal for busy households, pets that are difficult to medicate, and for ensuring there are no gaps in protection.
- Monthly Oral Protection (e.g., Spectra): Given once a month and provides coverage against fleas, ticks, and intestinal parasites. This approach works well for clients who prefer a monthly routine or for pets already on combination parasite prevention programs.
Our Recommendation
If your pet goes outside – even within your neighbourhood – we recommend they be on tick prevention. Annual screening for tick-borne diseases is also important, along with reviewing your pet’s prevention plan each spring to ensure it remains appropriate.
A Year-Round Necessity
Seeing three positive cases in the first month of spring is a clear signal that tick prevention is no longer seasonal; it is becoming a year-round necessity. Our goal is to keep your pet healthy, active, and protected by staying ahead of risks before they become problems.
